The Hermit
The Hermit is the deliberate step away from the crowd. Upright, it points to solitude, careful introspection, and wisdom found by turning inward or seeking a teacher. Reversed, it shows withdrawal that has hardened into isolation, or eyes shut against what the lantern shows. The card asks: what would you learn if you stopped talking for a while?

Tarot flashcards for the whole deck
This page is a set of 78 tarot flashcards, one for every card in the Rider-Waite-Smith deck. Each card shows its face first, the way it turns up in a reading. Look at it, say what you think it means, then check yourself against the keywords and the summary beneath. Flip the card to rest your eyes on its back before the next one. Every card links to its full meaning when you want the longer read.
How to study the deck
- A suit a week. Choose one suit above and walk it ace to king until the story of the suit holds together. Five weeks covers the deck.
- A card a day. Open one card each day, sit with its image for a minute, and carry its keywords with you. The deck takes 78 days at this pace.
- Random drills. Once the suits feel familiar, press Random and name the card's upright and reversed sense before you look. This is the closest practice to a real draw.
The five suits
- Major Arcana. Twenty-two cards for the large movements of a life, from The Fool's first step to The World's completion.
- Wands. Fire. Will, drive, and the work you start: fourteen cards about energy and where it goes.
- Cups. Water. Feeling, love, and what moves between people: fourteen cards about the heart.
- Swords. Air. Thought, truth, and conflict: fourteen cards about the mind and what it cuts.
- Pentacles. Earth. Money, body, and craft: fourteen cards about what you build and keep.

- How many cards are in a tarot deck?
- A tarot deck has 78 cards. The 22 Major Arcana carry the large themes of a life, from The Fool to The World. The 56 Minor Arcana are four suits of 14: Wands, Cups, Swords, and Pentacles, each running ace to ten with a page, a knight, a queen, and a king.
- How long does it take to learn tarot?
- Most people can read a simple three-card spread with confidence after a few weeks of steady practice. One card a day covers the whole deck in under three months. Fluency, where the cards speak to each other, keeps growing for as long as you read.
- Are the flashcards free?
- Yes. Every one of the 78 flashcards is free, with the full card face, the keywords, and the summary of each card.
- Do I need an account?
- No. You can study every card without an account. A free account adds one thing: it tracks which cards you have studied, so the progress ring fills in as you go.
